She intended to enrol for drawing courses but all places had been taken. The tri-dimensionality of sculpture enthralled her at once: a passion was born. She followed the teaching of various professors to finally join the \u201cValkeveen Sculpture Group\u201d, after which she acquired her own in-house workshop and became a member of the foundation \u201cArt in Laren\u201d. Many years of apprenticeship passed by before she wanted to discover the impact that her work could have on a larger public. It was in 2016 that she first opened her workshop to the public during a studio event in her native city of Laren (The Netherlands).<\/p>\n<h5>Focus on sculpture<\/h5>\n<p>This set a change in her life in motion. She lives alternately in the Netherlands and on the Spanish Costa Blanca where she has regular exhibitions .<\/p>\n<h5>Partial to wax and stone<\/h5>\n<p>Monique uses various materials but predominantly wax. This material demands swift handling or too quickly it turns soft and unuseable. During winter months in Spain she is able to work in wax until the weather turns too hot. Wax is suitable to capture an impression, an expressive fleeting moment that can thereafter be transposed into bronze, an expensive but invaluable material. Dancers and horses are Monique\u2019s preferred subjects though she enjoys also working with human models.<\/p>\n<h5>Figurative as well as abstract<\/h5>\n<p>Whether in wax, clay or stucco, Monique creates figurative objects. In wood and stone her sculptures spontaneously become more abstract. The grains in the wood or the patterns of the stone (as French limestone, serpentine or marble) lead her to the final sculpture. This means slowly chiselling the material away, which after a long search reveals the ultimate shape. Spain is rich in beautiful marble, \u201crojo de Alicante\u201d and \u201ccrema marfil\u201d which Monique prefers. The quarries lie close to Alicante, which isn\u2019t not far from her alternate Spanish home.<\/p>\n<h5>The capture of movement in drawings<\/h5>\n<p>Her initial interest in model drawing was to acquire a better knowledge of the human anatomy that she could then transfer into her sculptures. Monique has become fascinated by the contrast between swift drawing and working more slowly creating artisanal sculptures. She very quickly draws from models and moving dancers. She then \u201ccaptures\u201d the movement in rapid charcoal, pastel or ink sketches. Only short poses are possible of a live subject that might last one, two, five or ten minutes however dancers just keep moving. This is also an inspiration for her sculptures. Want een beeld moet vanzelf oproepen dat je het van verschillende kanten wilt bekijken, of wilt aanraken.\r\n<h5>Geboorte van een passie<\/h5>\r\n25 Jaar geleden komt Monique bij de Gooise Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten bij toeval in aanraking met beeldhouwen. Ze wil zich voor tekenen inschrijven, maar dat zat vol. Het driedimensionale van beeldhouwen fascineert haar meteen: een passie ontstaat. Bij de Gooise Academie heeft ze van verschillende docenten les gehad, daarna sloot ze zich aan bij de Beeldhouwgroep Valkeveen, kreeg ze een atelier aan huis en werd ze lid van de stichting \u2018Kunst in Laren\u2019. Na jaren van ontwikkeling wil ze weten wat haar werk bij een breder publiek oproept. In 2016 stelt ze voor het eerst haar atelier open tijdens de atelierdagen in haar woonplaats Laren (NL).\r\n<h5>Focus op beeldhouwen<\/h5>\r\nDit zet een verandering in haar leven in gang. Er komen veel bezoekers en ze krijgt uitgesproken reacties, als: \u2018Alles leeft gewoon\u2019. \u2018Prachtige collectie, veel vakmanschap\u2019. \u2018Everything moves and has soul of its own\u2019. \u2018Wat een dynamiek in de beelden\u2019. \u2018Zeer professioneel. Beeldschoon\u2019. \u2018Heel mooie tekeningen met de expressie van dans\u2019. \u2018Prachtig krachtig werk\u2019. Na een carri\u00e8re in het communicatievak focust ze nu op beeldhouwen en neemt ze alleen nog selectief opdrachten als communicatieadviseur en trainer aan. Ze woont deels in Nederland en deels aan de Spaanse Costa Blanca en exposeert daar regelmatig.\r\n<h5>Voorkeur voor was en steen<\/h5>\r\nMonique werkt in verschillende materialen, maar veel in was. Daarin moet je relatief snel werken, omdat het anders te zacht wordt. In Spanje zal ze hier alleen in de wintermaanden mee kunnen werken, anders is het te warm. Was leent zich om een impressie vast te leggen, een expressief moment, wat daarna in brons kan worden gegoten. Een duur maar ook duurzaam materiaal. Dansers en paarden zijn haar favoriete onderwerpen en soms werkt ze naar model.\r\n<h5>Zowel figuratief als abstracter<\/h5>\r\nIn was en klei en een enkele keer gips werkt ze vooral figuratief. Maar in hout of steen worden haar beelden vanzelf abstracter. Dan leiden de nerven in het hout of de tekening in de steen (zoals Franse kalksteen, serpentijn of marmer) haar tot het beeld. Dit betekent langzaam het beeld met de beitel afpellen en soms lang zoeken naar de uiteindelijke vorm. In Spanje heeft ze mooie marmersoorten als \u2018crema marfil\u2019 en \u2018rojo de Alicante\u2019 leren kennen. De groeves zitten in de buurt van Alicante.\r\n<h5>Beweging vangen in tekeningen<\/h5>\r\nAanvankelijk ging ze alleen modeltekenen om voor haar beelden meer inzicht in de anatomie van het menselijk lichaam te krijgen. Nu vindt ze juist het contrast tussen het snelle tekenwerk en het langzame, ambachtelijke beeldhouwwerk interessant. Ze maakt tekeningen naar model en van dansers. Ze \u2018vangt\u2019 beweging in snelle schetsen van cont\u00e9, pastel of inkt naar korte modelstanden (van 1, 2, 5 of 10 minuten) en van dansers die blijven bewegen. Dit geeft ook inspiratie voor beelden. Een beweging die in haar hoofd blijft hangen, om daar later een beeldje van te maken. Monique: \u2018Ik heb nog z\u00f2veel beelden in mijn hoofd. Elle d\u00e9sirait suivre des cours de dessin mais toutes les places \u00e9taient prises. Elle s\u2019inscrivit au cours de sculpture. D\u2019embl\u00e9e, l\u2019approche tridimensionnelle de la sculpture la fascine : une passion na\u00eet. A l\u2019acad\u00e9mie Gooise, elle suivit les cours de divers enseignants puis joignit le groupe de sculpture\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Valkeren\u00a0\u00bb, y obtint un atelier et devint membre de la fondation \u00ab\u00a0Art a Laren\u00a0\u00bb. Apres des ann\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9tude, elle s\u2019int\u00e9ressa \u00e0 l\u2019impact de son travail sur un plus large public. En 2016, elle ouvrit son atelier au public durant les \u00ab\u00a0journ\u00e9es d\u2019atelier\u00a0\u00bb, dans sa ville natale de Laren (Pays Bas).\r\n<h5>Dominance de la sculpture<\/h5>\r\nSa vie changea. Les visiteurs affluent et les commentaires sont enthousiastes : \u201dtout semble vivre, tout simplement\u201d, \u201csuperbe collection, beaucoup de comp\u00e9tence\u201d, \u201ctout bouge et poss\u00e8de une \u00e2me en soi\u201d, \u201cquelle dynamique dans ces sculptures!\u201d, \u201ctr\u00e8s professionnel, merveilleux\u201d, \u201ctr\u00e8s beaux dessins dans l\u2019expression de la dance\u201d, \u201csplendide, vigoureux travail\u201d. Apres une carri\u00e8re dans le m\u00e9tier de la communication, elle se concentre maintenant sur la sculpture et n\u2019accepte plus que de fa\u00e7on tr\u00e8s s\u00e9lective des missions de conseiller en communication. Elle vit alternativement aux Pays-Bas et sur la Costa Blanca o\u00f9 elle expose r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement.\r\n<h5>Le choix de la cire et de la pierre<\/h5>\r\nMonique travaille divers mat\u00e9riaux mais pr\u00e9f\u00e8re la cire, qui exige un travail rapide parce qu'elle se ramollit rapidement. En Espagne, elle ne peut travailler la cire que durant les mois d\u2019hiver, sinon il y fait trop chaud. La cire est id\u00e9ale pour capturer une impression fugitive, un moment expressif qui peut ensuite \u00eatre fix\u00e9 dans le bronze, un mat\u00e9riau de qualit\u00e9 mais \u00e9galement on\u00e9reux. Des danseurs et des chevaux sont ses mod\u00e8les de pr\u00e9dilection mais il lui arrive de travailler \u00e0 partir d\u2019un mod\u00e8le.\r\n<h5>Tant le mode figuratif qu\u2019abstrait.<\/h5>\r\nLa cire, la glaise et parfois le pl\u00e2tre, donnent naissance \u00e0 des sculptures figuratives mais ses sculptures en bois et pierre sont spontan\u00e9ment plus abstraites. Dans leurs cas, les veines du bois ou la structure de la pierre (tel que le calcaire fran\u00e7ais, le serpentin ou le marbre) dictent la forme de la sculpture. Cela exige d\u2019elle un travail lent au ciseau, de mise \u00e0 nu de la mati\u00e8re et une recherche, parfois fort longue, de la forme d\u00e9finitive. En Espagne, elle a eu acc\u00e8s \u00e0 de fort belles sortes de marbre tels le \u201ccrema marfil\u201d et le \u201crojo de Alicante\u201d, dont les carri\u00e8res sont proches d\u2019Alicante.\r\n<h5>Capturer le mouvement dans les dessins<\/h5>\r\nMonique, \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts, ne dessina des mod\u00e8les que pour acqu\u00e9rir une meilleure connaissance de l\u2019anatomie humaine. Pour l\u2019heure, elle trouve int\u00e9ressant le contraste entre l\u2019ex\u00e9cution rapide d\u2019un dessin et la lente \u00e9laboration artisanale d\u2019une sculpture. Elle dessine, en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral d\u2019apr\u00e8s un mod\u00e8le mais aussi, parfois, des danseurs et danseuses en pleine activit\u00e9.\r\n\r\nElle capture le mouvement de son mod\u00e8le dans de rapides esquisses au cont\u00e9, pastel ou encre, apr\u00e8s de courts moments de pose (de une \u00e0 cinq et tout au plus dix minutes) ainsi que de danseurs perp\u00e9tuellement en mouvement. Voil\u00e0 d\u2019ailleurs une source d\u2019inspiration pour ses sculptures : un mouvement qui reste imprim\u00e9 dans sa m\u00e9moire, pour se transformer par apr\u00e8s en sculpture. Vive alternativamente en los Pa\u00edses Bajos y en la Costa Blanca donde tiene exposiciones regulares.\r\n<h5>Preferencia por la cera y la piedra<\/h5>\r\nMonique usa varios materiales, pero predominantemente cera. Este material exige un manejo r\u00e1pido o demasiado r\u00e1pido que se vuelve suave e inutilizable. Durante los meses de invierno en Espa\u00f1a puede trabajar en cera hasta que el clima es demasiado caliente. La cera es adecuada para capturar una impresi\u00f3n, un momento expresivo que luego puede fundirse en bronce, un material costoso pero inapreciable. Los bailarines y los caballos son los temas preferidos de Monique, aunque tambi\u00e9n disfruta trabajando con modelos humanos.\r\n<h5>Figurativo y abstracto<\/h5>\r\nMonique crea objetos figurativos, sobre todo en cera y a veces en arcilla o estuco. En madera y piedra, sus esculturas se vuelven espont\u00e1neamente m\u00e1s abstractas. Los granos en la madera o dibujos en de la piedra (como piedra caliza francesa, serpentina o m\u00e1rmol) la llevan a la escultura final. Esto significa cincelar lentamente el material, lo que despu\u00e9s de una larga b\u00fasqueda revela la forma definitiva.
